Highlights include:
“A testimony to the beauty of print.” —The New Yorker
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to take in a US-Mexico game at Estadio Azteca, this episode is for you. Howler contributor Robert Andrew Powell takes us behind the fencing and riot police to witness the USMNT’s historic win in August 2012.
If you’ve been to a Major League Soccer game, you’ve probably heard this chant—we’ll call it YSA for short. In this episode of Howler Radio, we talk to a fan group about how it started. We hear from pro goalkeeper Jon Busch about what it’s like to be called an asshole in public. We ask a sports psychologist whether the chant is even, you know, effective. And we have a pretty interesting interview with a league official about how far MLS is willing to go in order to eradicate “You suck, asshole!” from its stadiums.
"The best expression of the state of soccer in America right now."—The New York Times
Howler is a new magazine about soccer covering the global game from the perspective of North American fans. It’s produced (and printed) in the United States by a team of editors who have worked for magazines such as GQ, National Geographic Adventure and Conde Nast Porfolio. But Howler is a completely independent project, something we make on our own time, to our own standards, and about a subject that we truly love.
Howler comes out four times a year and is available at independent bookstores and directly from our shop.
(You can also see a full preview of Issue 01 in the shop.) Issue 02 will be released in January.
